John Mayer Expands Sphere Residency to 18 Shows, Including John Mayer Trio Reunion

John Mayer has expanded his upcoming residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas to 18 shows, adding 12 performances to his previously announced six-date run. The residency will take place between April 8 and June 5, 2027, and will feature Mayer performing solo, alongside his full band, and with the reunited John Mayer Trio.

The expansion follows strong demand for the original shows and marks Mayer's first residency at the venue as a solo headliner. He is no stranger to the Sphere, having previously performed 48 concerts there with Dead & Company across the band's 2024 and 2025 residencies.

But this time, Mayer will have the opportunity to showcase the many different sides of his own musical career.

Three Sides of John Mayer in One Show

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the residency is its format. Rather than separating his different musical projects into individual concerts, each show will feature three distinct configurations: solo, full band, and the John Mayer Trio.

The solo portion will lean heavily on Mayer's acoustic guitar work, with additional performances on electric guitar and piano. It's a format that should be familiar to fans who attended his 2023 Solo Tour, where stripped-down arrangements offered a different perspective on some of his best-known songs.

The full-band performances will provide a considerably different experience, allowing Mayer to revisit the larger arrangements and guitar-driven material that have defined much of his recording career.

And then there's the John Mayer Trio.

The Return of the John Mayer Trio

For guitar enthusiasts, the return of the John Mayer Trio might be the biggest news of the announcement.

The group reunites Mayer with drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Pino Palladino, bringing together a lineup that hasn't performed as a trio since 2017.

Originally formed in 2005, the group offered Mayer an opportunity to explore his blues influences more directly, moving away from the acoustic-driven pop sound that defined his early career.

Their 2005 live album, Try!, demonstrated just how different Mayer could sound when placed alongside two highly accomplished musicians in a stripped-down blues-rock setting.

Songs such as "Who Did You Think I Was," "Good Love Is on the Way," and the trio's interpretations of earlier Mayer material showcased a more aggressive and improvisational side of his playing.

The trio was also an important part of the musical transition that eventually produced Continuum, widely regarded as one of the defining albums of Mayer's career.

We've previously explored that record and the rest of his discography in our ranking of every John Mayer album.

What makes the trio particularly compelling is the chemistry between its three members. Jordan and Palladino are both exceptional musicians, and their ability to respond to Mayer's playing in real time gives the group considerable room for improvisation.

At a venue as technologically ambitious as the Sphere, hearing that interaction could be one of the highlights of the residency.

Mayer Returns to a Familiar Venue

Although this will be Mayer's first Sphere residency under his own name, he already has extensive experience performing at the venue.

As a member of Dead & Company, Mayer played 48 shows at the Sphere during the band's 2024 and 2025 runs, becoming familiar with its massive visual displays and immersive sound capabilities.

The venue features approximately 160,000 square feet of interior LED displays, surrounding the audience with high-resolution visuals. Its immersive audio system also allows sound to be directed with unusual precision throughout the arena.

Those capabilities open up some intriguing possibilities for Mayer's performances.

His playing is often defined by subtle changes in dynamics, touch, and phrasing. The contrast between an intimate acoustic performance and a full-band production could be particularly effective in a venue designed to create different audiovisual environments.

Of course, exactly how Mayer plans to incorporate the Sphere's visual technology into his performances remains to be seen.

John Mayer Sphere Residency Dates for 2027

The expanded residency now includes 18 performances across April, May, and June.

April 2027: 8, 10, 11, 15, 17, 18, 28, 30

May 2027: 1, 5, 7, 8, 12, 14, 15

June 2027: 2, 4, 5

All performances will take place at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

A Residency That Showcases Mayer's Versatility

There's a reason this announcement is particularly exciting for guitar fans.

Mayer has spent much of his career moving between different musical worlds. His early success came through pop songwriting, but his subsequent work has incorporated blues, soul, folk, rock, and improvisational music.

Those influences have produced some very different versions of John Mayer over the years.

The acoustic singer-songwriter behind "Neon" isn't quite the same performer as the guitarist tearing through an extended blues solo with the John Mayer Trio. And neither experience is identical to seeing him perform with his full band.

Yet all three are important parts of his musical identity.

By incorporating each of those approaches into one concert, Mayer is giving audiences an unusually comprehensive look at his musicianship.

For longtime fans, the Trio reunion alone could make the residency worth attending. But the opportunity to experience three different sides of Mayer's playing in one of the world's most technologically advanced concert venues makes this an especially interesting chapter in his career.
